Winter Holidays in
Greece
Have you ever thought of sailing on Greece during the winter? Of
course not,how wrong of us to think that. Greece is much more
than “Sun and Sea” and
sailing in
Greece during the winter (off season) is the best time to
Discover Greece. On the south, the climate is still mild, there
are always free places on the harbors, many sites to visit which
are quieter, and the welcome often warmer. Corfu Yachting offers
a pleasant program it combines nature and culture, or you
implement your own adventurous sport, leisure, or educational
activities.
Sailing in
Greece during December and January gives you many advantages
such as: much better prices, light crowds, good air quality.
Greek
islands offer beautiful discoveries, from
Amorgos monastery to Nissyros
volcano, from Symi chapels to
Rhodes medieval castles, from the authentic Karpathos to the
Creta villages and her impressive Minoan Palaces.
The holidays
in Greece are special times, beginning with the feast of St.
Nikolaos on December 6th, when many Greeks exchange gifts.
By comparison with most Western European countries, Greece's
celebration is still genuine and not commercialized.. It’s a
time for faith and family. New Year's Eve is celebrated
more and more vigorously in Athens and elsewhere, and larger
hotels usually host a party.
On the
Island of Corfu St. Spyridon is celebrated on December 12th.
This is a local and very special holiday. Households prepare for
this day a week in advance. They prepare (kourabiedes) sweet
butter cookies sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar, honey dipped
cookies and a very traditional sweet called Sperna . Once you
try this I guarantee you’ll be asking for the recipe.
On the
island of Chios, ship models are created and carried around by
groups of fishermen singing songs. January 1st is the
Feast of St. Basil, when many Greeks practice the old custom of
slicing a piece of the Vassilopita (Basil Cake) in hopes of
finding a lucky coin concealed by the baker. Though St. Nikolaos
may seem to be a more obvious inspiration for Santa Claus, it's
St. Basil who visits with gifts on this day. Playing cards on a
table covered with lucky green felt is also supposed to assure
abundance the whole year through.
On
January 8th, a few remote villages practice role-reversal,
with the women pursuing male activities (mainly consisting of
drinking coffee at the kafeneions ( cafes) and playing cards)
while the men attempt to fullfill the women's roles at home. An
evening celebration follows as things return to "normal" for
another year - and possibly some new understanding lingers, at
least for a few months!
Book a
winter holiday with Corfu yachting on a sailing yacht or with
the yacht Aegeotissa ( pictured above) The captain and his crew
are something more than typical sailors, warm personal service,
delicious home- cooking and Greek hospitality. Once on an
Aegeotissa Yacht, I guarantee you’ll want to come back the
following winter.
